How do I permanently remove the Google screen that appears when I swipe right from Home screen Google Assistant Community

When the Nexus 5 launched along with Android 4.4 KitKat, a new launcher was introduced on Google's flagship smartphone. The launcher integrates Google Now directly into the home screen. Jason Cipriani is based out of beautiful Colorado and has been covering mobile technology news and reviewing the latest gadgets for the last six years. His work can also be found on sister site CNET in the How To section, as well as across several more online publications.

To do this, access Google Assistant settings just like you did in the steps above, but this time select the You menu at the top of the screen. On the Assistant settings screen, you’ll see a toggle switch you can disable next to Hey Google under Voice Match. Whether it’s due to privacy concerns or any other reason, it doesn’t seem very straightforward to turn the OK Google feature on or off on your phone. In fact it doesn’t seem easy to adjust many of the Google Assistant settings. Been using Nova launcher for years now and it works better than the stock launcher in all regards.

How To Turn OK Google On and Off on Your Android Device

The following are some of the most important Google Assistant settings you should know to make better use of Google Assistant. When you start digging through Google Assistant settings, you’ll see that there are a lot of useful settings buried there. If you ever want to turn OK Google back on, just repeat the process above, but enable the toggle switch to the right of Hey Google. This setting is misleading, because it also enables and disables Assistant’s response to the statement “OK Google” as well as “Hey Google”. Whether that difficulty is built into the app intentionally is debatable, but at least it’s possible to disable it.

It’s a small added convenience, but it’s a useful one. For example if you ask “OK google, what’s the weather in Kingsport, Tennessee? ”, after Assistant tells you, you can just say “navigate to Kingsport, Tennessee” without having to say “OK Google” again. When you enable Continued Conversation , Assistant won’t require you to say “OK Google” or “Hey Google” in order to ask a follow-up question. Here you can select the units you prefer whenever you ask for the current or forecasted weather. Another way to help Assistant give you better suggestions when you’re searching for things is by telling it what your personal preferences are.

Change other Home screen settings

But which phones support this by default? Google’s own Pixel devices should have this feature, as well as some older Nexus phones, but I also managed to get it working on my Pocophone F1 without any shenanigans. You can also find various reports on the forums saying which phone supports it and which doesn’t. And Google not releasing the official statement also doesn’t help.

From the main Assistant settings screen, select Assistant voice. Scroll down to the bottom of the Assistant settings menu and tap Phone under the Assistant devices section. But then there’s the question of Google Assistant, and how disabling “Ok Google” affects it. The good news is that—assuming your device has Assistant in the first place—you can disable Ok Google without dramatically altering how Assistant works. Instead of actually saying the command to launch Assistant, you’ll just launch it with a long-press of the home button . If you’re looking to completely disable Assistant, you can do that too.

'Ok Google' bar, gone from my home screen.

This means you can use your Bluetooth earbuds to wake up Google Assistant at any time. While it’s not as convenient as speaking directly to your phone, it’s still better to take it out of your pocket every time you need to check the weather forecast. If you don’t have Android Auto pre-installed on your device, head over to the Play Store, and install it. Just set it up by allowing a few permissions and agreeing to a few terms, and you’re good to go. You'll sometimes find animations in the search bar on your Home screen.

On your Home screen, touch and hold an empty space. Some of these steps require you to tap the screen. Home control is a selection under the Assistant menu as well. Face Match is another selection in the Assistant menu. You can set up Assistant to default to transportation modes when you ask for directions by setting how you travel.

How to Turn Off and Delete Your “Ok Google” History

Scroll across the circles from left to right and tap each one to hear an example of the voice. You’ll notice different accents and genders to choose from. Once you find the one you like, just keep it selected and Assistant will use that voice going forward. Been using phone 2 hours, ready to return it, and consider looking for another Nokia 8.

Once you set up the Face Match feature, Google Assistant will recognize your face using the forward-facing camera. Once it recognizes you, it’ll make sure to tailor responses to all of your preferences settings. There you can select if you prefer Gluten free, Vegan, or Vegetarian. This will help whenever you ask your phone or Google Home for recipes. Now you can tell Google Assistant to show you navigational directions to that location with a simple voice command. Unfortunately, turning the OK Google feature off on your Android isn’t very easy to do.

How to use OK Google when the screen is off

There are almost 50 languages to choose from. Even if you do know English, sometimes having Assistant work in your native language can improve functionality since it’ll understand your commands better. You’ll also understand its responses to you more easily. You’ll do this from the Settings menu under the Assistant menu. However, disabling this toggle switch will in fact turn OK Google off.

Tap and hold each notification and choose Minimize. This will significantly reduce the space used by Android Auto notifications. They’ll still be there, but at least they won’t be as distracting.

But for others, I can see how it would be annoying having it set as a dedicated home screen -- especially if you're not a huge fan of Google Now. On a Nexus 5 you no longer need to swipe up from the home button to access Google Now. Google Now has a permanent place on your home screen, being the screen furthest to the left. Swiping over will reveal Google Now and all of your personal cards, and of course, you can still access the service by swiping up from the home button.

A launcher on Android is an app that will allow you to customize and tweak your device beyond that of the default launcher installed.

As I said above, voice unlock is probably the weakest security measure you can have on your phone, because it’s very gullible. Now Google Assistant will listen all the time, even if the screen is off, and you’ll be able to unlock your phone with a simple voice command. So, unlocking your phone with the screen off should be as easy as saying “OK Google”, right? Because not all phones are created equal, and not all phones are supposed to allow you to unlock them with your voice.

As Android Auto is integrated with Google Assistant, and you shouldn’t be using your phone while driving, it allows you to interact with your device even when the screen is off. So, as long as you keep Android Auto running in the background, you’re covered. On some phones, you can have more than one Home screen.
